The Dhammapada Sutta

Kinh Pháp Cú

I.     PHẨM SONG YẾU—THE  TWIN VERSES

Of all dharmas, mind is the forerunner, mind is chief. We are what we think, we have become what we thought (what we are today came from our thoughts of yesterday). If we speak or act with a deluded mind or evil thoughts, suffering or pain follows us, as the wheel follows the hoof of the draught-ox.

2. Trong các pháp, tâm dẫn đầu, tâm làm chủ, tâm tạo tác tất cả. Nếu đem tâm thanh tịnh tạo nghiệp nói năng hoặc hành động, sự vui sẽ theo nghiệp kéo đến như bóng với hình—Of all dharmas, mind is the forerunner, mind is chief. We are what we think, we have become what we thought. If we speak or act with a pure mind or thought, happiness and joy follows us, as our  own shadow that never leaves.

3. “Người kia lăng mạ tôi, đánh đập tôi, phá hại tôi, và cướp đoạt của tôi.” Ai còn ôm ấp tâm niệm ấy, thì sự oán hận không thể nào dứt hết—“He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me.” Hatred will never leave those who dwell on such thoughts.

4. “Người kia lăng mạ tôi, đánh đập tôi, phá hại tôi, và cướp đọat của  tôi.” Ai bỏ được tâm niệm ấy, thì sự oán giận tự nhiên san bằng—“He  abused me, he hit me, he defeated me, he robbed me.” Hatred will leave those who do not harbor such thoughts.

Đó là định luật của ngàn xưa—In this world, hatred never destroys (eliminates) hatred, only love does. This is an eternal law.

Nếu họ hiểu rõ điều đó, thì chẳng còn tranh luận nữa.”—Some never sees that everybody perishes in any argument. Those who realize this, do not argue.

7. Những người chỉ muốn sống trong khoái lạc, không chịu nhiếp hộ các căn, ăn uống vô độ, biếng nhác chẳng tinh cần, họ là người dễ bị ma nhiếp phục như cành mềm trước cơn gió—Those who only want to live with pleasant things, with senses unrestrained, in  food immoderate, indolent, inactive, are quickly overthrown by the mara as a weak tree breaks before a big wind.

8. Những người nguyện ở trong cảnh chẳng khoái lạc, khôn khéo nhiếp hộ các căn, uống ăn tiết độ, vững tin và siêng năng, ma không dễ gì thắng họ, như gió thổi núi đá—Those who contemplate “impurities,” with senses restrained, moderate in food, faithful and active, mara cannot overthrow him as it’s impossible for the  wind to overthrow a rocky mountain.

9. Mặc áo cà sa mà không rời bỏ những điều uế trược, không thành thật khắc kỷ, thà chẳng mặc còn hơn—Wearing a yellow saffron robe with an impure mind. What will the robe do if truthfulness is lacking and discipline or self-control is denied?

10.   Rời bỏ những điều uế trược, giữ gìn giới luật tinh nghiêm, khắc kỷ và chân thành, người như thế đáng mặc áo cà sa—He who drops all stain, stands on virtue, learns discipline and speaks the truth. Then the yellow robe will fit him.

11.   Hão huyền mà tưởng là chơn thật, chơn thật lại thấy là phi chơn, cứ tư duy một cách tà vạy, người như thế không thể nào đạt đến chơn thật—In the untruth the foolish see the truth, while the truth is seen as the untruth. Those who harbor such wrong thoughts never realize the truth.

12.   Chơn thật nghĩ là chơn thật, phi chơn biết là phi chơn, cứ tư duy một cách đúng đắn, người như thế mới thật chứng được chơn thật—What is truth regarded as truth, what is untruth regarded as untruth. Those who harbor such right thoughts realize the truth.

13.   Nhà lợp không kín ắt bị mưa dột thế nào, kẻ tâm không tu tất bị tham dục lọt vào cũng thế—As rain penetrates and leaks into an ill-thatched hut, so  does passion enter an untrained mind (uncultivated mind).

14.   Nhà khéo lợp kín ắt không bị mưa dột, kẻ tâm khéo tu tất không bị tham dục lọt vào—As rain does not penetrate a well-thatched hut, so does passion not enter a cultivated mind.

15.   Ở chỗ nầy ăn năn, tiếp ở chỗ khác cũng ăn năn, kẻ làm điều ác nghiệp, cả hai nơi đều ăn năn; vì thấy ác nghiệp mình gây ra, kẻ kia sanh ra ăn năn và chết mòn—The evil-doer grieves in this world and in the next; he grieves in both. He grieves and suffers when he perceives the evil of his own deeds.

16.   Ở chỗ nầy vui, tiếp ở chỗ khác cũng vui; kẻ làm điều thiện nghiệp, cả hai nơi đều an vui; vì thấy thiện nghiệp mình gây ra, người kia sanh ra an lạc và cực lạc—The virtuous man rejoices in this world, and in the next. He is happy in both worlds. He rejoices and delights when he perceives the purity of his own deeds.

17.   Ở chỗ nầy than buồn, tiếp ở chỗ khác cũng than buồn, kẻ gây điều ác nghiệp, cả hai nơi đều than buồn: nghĩ rằng “tôi đã tạo ác” vì vậy nên nó than buồn. Hơn nữa còn than buồn vì phải đọa vào cõi khổ—The evil man suffers in this world and in the next. He suffers everywhere. He suffers whenever he thinks of the evil deeds  he has done. Furthermore he suffers even more when he has gone to a woeful path.

18.   Ở chỗ nầy hoan hỷ, tiếp ở chỗ khác cũng hoan hỷ, kẻ tu hành phước nghiệp, cả hai nơi đều hoan hỷ: nghĩ rằng “tôi đã tạo phước” vì vậy nên nó hoan hỷ. Hơn nữa còn hoan hỷ vì được sanh vào cõi lành—The virtuous man is happy here in this world, and he is happy there in the next. He is happy everywhere. He is happy when he thinks of the good deeds he has done. Furthermore, he is even happier  when he has gone to a blissful path.

The heedless man even if he can recite many sacred sutras, but fails to act accordingly; he has no share in the fruits of the monastic life, but is like a cowherd who counts the cows of the master, but has none of his own.

20.   Tuy tụng ít kinh mà thường y giáo hành trì, hiểu biết chân chánh, diệt trừ tham sân si, tâm hiền lành thanh tịnh, giải thoát và xả bỏ thế tục, thì dù ở cõi nầy hay cõi khác, người kia vẫn hưởng phần ích lợi của Sa-môn—Even if a man recites few sutras, but acts in accordance with the teaching, overcoming all lust, hatred and ignorance, with true knowledge and serene mind, clinging to nothing here and hereafter, he shares the fruits of a monastic life.

II.   PHẨM KHÔNG BUÔNG LUNG

 HEEDFULNESS

21.   Không buông lung đưa tới cõi bất tử, buông lung đưa tới đường tử sanh; người không buông lung thì không chết, kẻ buông lung thì sống như thây ma—Heedfulness (Watchfulness) is the path of immortality. Heedlessness is the path of death. Those who are heedful do not die; those who are heedless are as if already dead.

Không buông lung thì đặng an vui trong các cõi Thánh—Those who have distinctly understood this, advance and rejoice on heedfulness, delight in the Nirvana.

23.   Nhờ kiên nhẫn, dõng mãnh tu thiền định và giải thoát, kẻ trí được an ổn, chứng nhập Vô thượng Niết bàn—Owing to perseverance and constant meditation, the wise men always realize the bond-free and strong powers to attain the highest happiness, the supreme Nirvana.

24.   Không buông lung, mà ngược lại cố gắng, hăng hái, chánh niệm, khắc kỷ theo tịnh hạnh, sinh hoạt đúng như pháp, thì tiếng lành càng ngày càng tăng trưởng—If a man is earnest, energetic, mindful; his deeds are pure; his acts are considerate and restraint;  lives according to the Law, then his glory will increase.

25.   Bằng sự cố gắng, hăng hái không buông lung, tự khắc chế lấy mình, kẻ trí tự tạo cho mình một hòn đảo chẳng có ngọn thủy triều nào nhận chìm được—By sustained effort, earnestness, temperance and self-control, the wise man may make for himself an island which no flood can overwhelm.

The ignorant  and foolish fall into sloth. The wise man guards earnestness as his greatest treasure.

27.   Chớ nên đắm chìm trong buông lung, chớ nên mê say với dục lạc; hãy nên cảnh giác và tu thiền, mới mong đặng đại an lạc—Do not indulge in heedlessness, nor sink into the enjoyment of love and lust. He who is earnest and meditative obtains great joy.

When the learned man drives away heedlessness by heedfulness, he is as the wise who, climbing the terraced heights of wisdom, looks down upon the fools, free from sorrow he looks upon sorrowing crowd, as a wise on a mountain peak surveys the ignorant far down on the ground.

29.   Tinh tấn giữa đám người buông lung, tỉnh táo giữa đám người mê ngủ, kẻ trí như con tuấn mã thẳng tiến bỏ lại sau con ngựa gầy hèn—Heedful  among the heedless, awake among the sleepers, the wise man advances as does a swift racehorse outrun a weak jade.

30.   Nhờ không buông lung, Ma Già lên làm chủ cõi chư Thiên, không buông lung luôn luôn được khen ngợi, buông lung luôn luôn bị khinh chê—It was through earnestness that Maghavan rised to the lordship of the gods. Earnestness is ever praised; negligence is always despised (blamed).

31.   Tỳ kheo nào thường ưa không buông lung hoặc sợ thấy sự buông lung, ta ví họ như ngọn lửa hồng, đốt tiêu tất cả kiết sử từ lớn chí nhỏ—A mendicant who delights in earnestness, who looks with fear on thoughtlessness, cannot fall away, advances like a fire, burning all his fetters both great and small.

32.   Tỳ kheo nào thường ưa không buông lung hoặc sợ thấy sự buông lung, ta biết họ là người gần tới Niết bàn, nhất định không bị sa đọa dễ dàng như trước—A mendicant who delights in earnestness, who looks with fear on thoughtlessness, cannot fall away, he is in the presence of Nirvana.

III. PHẨM TÂM—MIND

33.   Tâm kẻ phàm phu thường xao động biến hóa rất khó chế phục gìn giữ, nhưng kẻ trí lại chế phục tâm mình làm cho chánh trực một cách dễ dàng, như thợ khéo uốn nắn mũi tên—The wavering and restless, or unsteady mind, difficult to guard, difficult to hold back;  a wise man steadies his trembling mind and thought, as a fletcher makes straight his arrow.

34.   Như con cá bị quăng lên bờ sợ sệt và vùng vẫy thế nào, thì cũng như thế, các người hãy đem tâm lo sợ, phấn đấu để mau thoát khỏi cảnh giới ác ma—As a fish drawn from its watery abode and thrown upon the dry land, our thought quivers all over in its effort to escape the realm of Mara.

35.   Tâm phàm phu cứ xoay vần theo ngũ dục, xao động không dễ nắm bắt; chỉ những người nào đã điều phục được tâm mình mới được yên vui—It is good to control the mind, which is difficult to hold in and flighty, rushing wherever it wishes; a controlled mind brings happiness.

36.   Tâm phàm phu cứ xoay vần theo ngũ dục, biến hóa u-ẩn khó thấy, nhưng người trí lại thường phòng hộ tâm mình, và được yên vui nhờ tâm phòng hộ ấy—The mind is hard to perceive, extremely subtle, flits whenever it wishes. Let the wise person guard it; a guarded mind is conducive to hapiness.

37.   Tâm phàm phu cứ lén lút đi một mình, đi rất xa, vô hình vô dạng như ẩn náu hang sâu, nếu người nào điều phục được tâm, thì giải thoát khỏi vòng ma trói buộc—Traveling far, wandering alone, bodiless, lying in a cave, is the mind. Those who subdue it are freed from the bonds of Mara.

38.   Người tâm không an định, không hiểu biết chánh pháp, không tín tâm kiên cố, thì không thể thành tựu được trí tuệ cao—He whose mind is not steady, he who does not know the True Law, he whose confidence wavers, the wisdom of such a person will never be perfect.

39.   Người tâm đã thanh tịnh, không còn các điều hoặc loạn, vượt trên những nghiệp thiện ác thông thường, là người giác ngộ, chẳng sợ hãi—He whose mind is free from lust of desires, he who is not affected by hatred, he who has renounced both good and evil, for such a vigilant one there is no fear.

40.   Hãy biết rằng thân nầy mong manh như đồ gốm và giam giữ tâm ngươi như thành quách, ngươi hãy đánh dẹp ma quân với thanh huệ kiếm sẳn có của mình và nắm giữ phần thắng lợi, chứ đừng sanh tâm đắm trước—Knowing that this body is as fragile as a jar, establishing this mind as firm as a fortress, he should be able to fight Mara with the weapon of wisdom. He should be able to guard his conquest and be without attachment.

41.   Thân nầy thật là ngắn ngủi! Nó sẽ ngủ một giấc dài dưới ba thước đất, vô ý thức bị vất bỏ như khúc cây khô vô dụng—In a short period of time, this body will lie on the ground, cast aside, without consciousness, even as a useless piece of dry log.

42.   Cái hại của kẻ thù gây ra cho kẻ thù hay oan gia đối với oan gia, không bằng cái hại của tâm niệm hướng về hành vi tà ác gây ra cho mình—Whatever harm an enemy may do to an enemy, or a hater to a hater, an ill-directed mind can do one far greater harm.

What neither mother, nor father, nor any other relative can do, a well-directed mind can do one far greater good.

IV.   PHẨM HOA—FLOWERS

44.   Ai chinh phục được địa giới, diêm ma giới, thế gian nầy và cảnh giới chư Thiên; và ai khéo giảng nói pháp cú, như tay thợ khéo nhặt hoa làm tràng—Who shall comprehend this earth, and the realm of Yama, and this world (samsara) together  with the devas? Who shall investgate the well-taught Path of Virtue, even as an expert of garland weaver   (maker) will pick the right flowers?

45.   Bậc hữu học chinh phục được địa giới diêm ma giới, thiên giới, và bậc hữu học khéo giảng nói pháp cú như tay thợ khéo nhặt hoa làm tràng—A disciple in training, will comprehend this earth and the realm of Yama, together with the realm of the devas. A great disciple in training will investigate the well-taught Path of Vitue, even as an expert of garland maker will pick the right flowers.

46.   Hãy biết thân nầy như bọt nổi, rõ ràng là pháp huyễn hóa, để bẻ gẩy mũi tên cám dỗ của bọn ma quân, mà thoát ngoài vòng dòm ngó của tử thần—He who knows that this body is like foam of a wave, and comprehends its mirage-nature (the shadow of a mirage), one should destroy the flower-shafts of sensual passions, and pass beyond the sight of the king of death.

47.   Như nước lũ cuống phăng những xóm làng say ngủ giữa đêm trường, tử thần sẽ lôi phăng đi những người mê muội sinh tâm ái trước những bông hoa mình vừa góp nhặt được—Death carries off a man who gathers flowers of sensual pleasures, whose mind is distracted,  as a great flood sweeps away a sleeping village.

48.   Cứ sanh tâm ái trước và tham luyến mãi không chán những bông hoa mà mình vừa góp nhặt được, đó chính là cơ hội tốt cho tử thần lôi đi—The destroyer brings under his way the man who gathers flowers of sensual pleasures, whose mind distracted, and who is insatiate in his desires.

49.   Hàng Sa-môn (Mâu Ni) đi vào xóm làng để khất thực ví như con ong đi kiếm hoa, chỉ lấy mật rồi đi chứ không làm tổn thương về hương sắc—As a bee, without harming the flower, its color or scent, flies away, collecting only  the nectar, even so should the sage wander in the village.

50.   Chớ nên dòm ngó lỗi người, chớ nên dòm coi họ đã làm gì hay không làm gì, chỉ nên ngó lại hành động của mình, thử đã làm được gì và chưa làm được gì—Let not one look on the faults of others, nor  things left done and undone by others; but one’s own deeds done and undone.

51.   Như thứ hoa tươi đẹp chỉ phô trương màu sắc mà chẳng có hương thơm, những người chỉ biết nói điều lành mà không làm điều lành chẳng đem lại  ích lợi—As a flower that is colorful and beautiful, but without  scent, even so fruitless is the well-spoken words of one who does not practice it.

52.   Như thứ hoa tươi đẹp, vừa có màu sắc, lại có hương thơm, những người nói điều lành và làm được điều lành sẽ đưa lại kết quả tốt—As the flower that is colorful, beautiful, and full of scent, even so fruitful is the well-spoken words of one who practices it.

53.   Như từ đống hoa có thể làm nên nhiều tràng hoa, từ nơi thân người có thể tạo nên nhiều việc thiện—As from a heap of flowers many a garland is made, even so many good deeds should be done by one born to the mortal lot.

54.   Mùi hương của các thứ hoa, dù là hoa chiên đàn, hoa đa già la, hay hoa mạt ly đều không thể bay ngược gió, chỉ có mùi hương đức hạnh của người chân chính, tuy ngược gió vẫn bay khắp cả muôn phương—The scent of flowers does not blow  against the wind, nor does the fragrance of sandalwood and jasmine, but the fragrance of the virtuous blows against the wind; the virtuous man pervades every direction.

55.   Hương chiên đàn, hương đa già la, hương bạt tất kỳ, hương thanh liên, trong tất cả thứ hương, chỉ thứ hương đức hạnh là hơn cả—Of little account is the fragrance of sandal-wood, lotus, jasmine; above all these kinds of fragrance, the fragrance of  virtue is by far the best.

56.   Hương chiên đàn, hương đa già la đều là thứ hương vi diệu, nhưng không sánh bằng hương người đức hạnh, xông ngát tận chư thiên—Of little account is the fragrance of sandal; the fragrance of the virtuous rises up to the gods as the highest.

57.   Người nào thành tựu các giới hạnh, hằng ngày chẳng buông lung, an trụ trong chính trí và giải thoát, thì ác ma không thể dòm ngó được—Mara never finds the path of those who are virtuous, careful in living and freed by right knowledge.

As upon a heap of rubbish thrown by the roadside, a sweet smelling, lovely lotus may grow.

59.   Cũng thế chỉ từ nơi chốn phàm phu manh muội mới sản xuất những vị đại đệ tử của bậc chánh giác, đem trí tuệ soi sáng thế gian—Among the worthless beings, a great disciple of the Fully Enlightened One outshines the people who walk in darkness.

V.     PHẨM NGU—FOOLS

Cũng thế, vòng luân hồi sẽ tiếp nối vô tận với kẻ ngu si không minh đạt chánh pháp—Long is the night to the wakeful; long is the road to him who is tired; long is samsara to the foolish who do not know true Law.

61.   Không được kết bạn với kẻ hơn mình, không được kết bạn với kẻ ngang mình, thà quyết chí ở một mình tốt hơn kết bạn với người ngu muội—If a traveler does not meet a companion who is better or at least equal, let him firmly pursue his solitary career, rather than being in fellowship with the foolish.

62.   “Đây là con ta, đây là tài sản ta,” kẻ phàm phu thường lo nghĩ như thế, nhưng chẳng biết chính ta còn không thiệt có, huống là con ta hay tài sản ta?—These are my sons; this is my wealth; with such thought a fool is tormented. Verily, he is not even the owner of himself. Whence sons? Whence wealth?

63.   Ngu mà tự biết ngu, tức là trí, ngu mà tự xưng rằng trí, chính đó mới thật là ngu—A foolish man who knows that he is a fool, for that very reason a wise man; the fool who think himself   wise, he is indeed a real fool.

64.   Người ngu suốt đời gần gũi người trí vẫn chẳng hiểu gì Chánh pháp, ví như cái muỗng múc canh luôn mà chẳng bao giờ biết được mùi vị của canh—If a fool associates with a wise man even all his life, he will understand the Dharma as litle as  a spoon tastes the flavour of soup.

An intelligent person associates with a wise man, even for a moment, he will quickly understand the Dharma, as the tongue tastes the flavour of soup.

Cũng thế, những người tạo ác nghiệp nhất định phải cùng ác nghiệp đi đến khổ báo—A fool with little wit, goes through life with the very self as his own greatest enemy. In the same manner, evil doers do evil deeds,  the fruit of which is bitter.

67.   Những người gây điều bất thiện, làm xong ăn năn khóc lóc, nhỏ lệ dầm dề, vì biết mình sẽ phải thọ lấy quả báo tương lai—The deed is not well done of which a man must repent, and the reward of which he receives, weeping, with tearful face; one reaps the fruit thereof.

68.   Những người tạo các thiện nghiệp, làm xong chẳng chút ăn năn, còn vui mừng hớn hở, vì biết mình sẽ thọ lấy quả báo tương lai—The deed is well done when, after having done it, one repents not, and when, with joy and pleasure, one reaps the fruit thereof.

69.   Khi ác nghiệp chưa thành thục, người ngu tưởng như đường mật, nhưng khi ác nghiệp đã thành thục, họ nhứt định phải chịu khổ đắng cay—As long as the evil deed done does not bear fruit, the fool thinks it is as sweet as honey;  but when it ripens, then he comes to grief.

70.   Từ tháng này qua tháng khác, với món ăn bằng đầu ngọn cỏ Cô-sa (cỏ thơm), người ngu có thể lấy để nuôi sống, nhưng việc làm ấy không có giá trị bằng một phần mười sáu của người tư duy Chánh pháp—Let a fool, month after month, eats only as much food as can be picked up on the tip of a kusa blade; but he is not worth a sixteenth part of them who have comprehended the truth.

Cũng thế, kẻ phàm phu tạo ác nghiệp tuy chẳng cảm thụ quả ác liền, nhưng nghiệp lực vẫn âm thầm theo họ như lửa ngún giữa tro than—An evil deed committed may not immediately bear fruit, just as newl drawn milk does not turn sour at once. In the same manner,  smouldering, it follows the fool like fire covered with ashes.

72.   Kẻ phàm phu, lòng thì muốn cầu được trí thức mà hành động lại dẫn tới diệt vong, nên hạnh phúc bị tổn hại mà trí tuệ cũng tiêu tan—The knowledge and fame that the fool gains , so far from benefiting; they destroy his bright lot and cleave his head.

73.   Kẻ ngu xuẫn thường hay muốn danh tiếng mà mình không xứng: chỗ ngồi cao trong Tăng chúng, oai quyền trong Tăng lữ, danh vọng giữa các gia tộc khác—The fool always desire for an undue reputation or undeserved honour, precedence among the monks, authority in the monasteries, honour among other families.

74.   Hãy để cho người Tăng kẻ tục nghĩ rằng “sự nầy do ta làm, trong mọi việc lớn hay nhỏ đều do nơi ta cả.” Kẻ phàm phu cứ tưởng lầm như thế, nên lòng tham lam ngạo mạn tăng hoài—Let both monks and laymen think, “by myself was this done; in every work, great or small, let them refer to me.” Such is the ambition of the fool; his desires and pride increase.

75.   Một đàng đưa tới thế gian, một đàng đưa tới Niết bàn, hàng Tỳ kheo đệ tửø Phật, hãy biết rõ như thế, chớ nên tham đắm lợi lạc thế gian để chuyên chú vào đạo giải thoát—One is the path that leads to worldly gain, and another is the path leads to nirvana. Once understand this, the monks and the lay disciples of the Buddha, should not rejoice in the praise and worldly favours, but cultivate detachment.

VI.  PHẨM TRÍ GIẢ—THE WISE

Kết thân với người trí thì lành mà không dữ—Should you see an intelligent man who points out faults and blames what is blame-worthy, you should associate with such a wise person. It should be better, not worse for you to associate such a person.

77.   Những người hay khuyên răn dạy dỗ, cản ngăn tội lỗi kẻ khác, được người lành kính yêu bao nhiêu thì bị người dữ ghét bỏ bấy nhiêu—Those who advise, teach or dissuade one from evil-doing,  will be beloved and admired by the good, but they will be hated by the bad.

78.   Chớ nên làm bạn với người ác, chớ nên làm bạn với người kém hèn, hãy nên làm bạn với người lành, với người chí khí cao thượng—Do not associate or make friends with evil friends; do not associate with mean men. Associate with good friends; associate with noble men.

79.   Được uống nước Chánh pháp thì tâm thanh tịnh an lạc, nên người trí thường vui mừng, ưa nghe Thánh nhơn thuyết pháp—Those who drink the Dharma, live in happiness with a pacified mind; the wise man ever rejoices in the Dharma expounded by the sages.

80.   Người tưới nước lo dẫn nước, thợ làm cung tên lo uốn cung tên, thợ mộc lo nẩy mực đo cây, còn người trí thì lo tự điều phục lấy mình—Irrigators guide the water to where they want, fletchers bend the arrows, carpenters control their timber, and the wise control or master themselves.

81.   Như ngọn núi kiên cố, chẳng bao giờ bị gió lay, cũng như thế, những lời hủy báng hoặc tán dương chẳng bao giời làm lay động người đại trí—As a solid rock is not shaken by the wind; likewise, the wise are not moved by praise or blame.

82.   Như nước hồ sâu, vừa yên lặng trong sạch, những người có trí tuệ sau khi nghe pháp, tâm họ cũng thanh tịnh và yên lặng—Water in  a deep lake is clear and still; similarly, on hearing the Buddha teachings, the wise become extremely serene and peaceful.

Kẻ trí đã xa lìa niệm lự mừng lo, nên chẳng còn bị lay động vì khổ lạc—Good people give up all attachments, they don’t talk about sensual craving. The wise show neither elation nor depression; therefore, they are not affected by happiness or sorrow.

Được vậy mới thật là người đạo đức, trí tuệ và ngay thẳng—Neither for the sake of oneself, nor for the sake of another, a wise man does nothing wrong; he desires not son, wealth, or kingdom by doing wrong; he seeks his own success not by unjust means, then he is good, wise and righteous.

85.   Trong nhân loại chỉ có một ít người đạt đến bến bờ kia, còn bao nhiêu người khác thì đang bồi hồi vơ vẩn tại bờ nầy—Few are among men who crosses and reaches the other shore; the rest of mankind only run about the bank.

Those who preach and act according to the teachings, are those who are crossing the realm of passions which is so hard to cross, and those who will reach the other shore.

87.   Người trí hãy nên rời bỏ hắc pháp (ác pháp) mà tu tập bạch pháp (thiện pháp), xa gia đình nhỏ hẹp, xuất gia sống độc thân theo pháp tắc Sa-môn—A wise man should abandon the way of woeful states and follows the bright way. He should go from his home to the homeless state and live in accordance with the rules for Sramanas.

88.   Người trí phải gột sạch những điều cấu uế trong tâm, hãy cầu cái vui Chánh pháp, xa lìa ngũ dục mà chứng Niết bàn—A wise man should purge himself from all the impurities of the mind, give up sensual pleasures, and seek great delight in Nirvana.

89.   Người nào thường chính tâm tu tập các phép giác chi, xa lìa tánh cố chấp, rời bỏ tâm nhiễm ái, diệt hết mọi phiền não để trở nên sáng suốt, thì sẽ giải thoát và chứng đắc  Niết bàn ngay trong đời hiện tại—Those whose minds are well-trained and well-perfected in the seven factors of enlightenment, who give up of grasping, abandon defiled minds, and eradicate all afflictions. They are shinning ones and have completely liberated and attained Nirvana even in this world.

VII. PHẨM A-LA-HÁN—THE WORTHY

90.   Người đã giải thoát hết thảy, đã dứt hết thảy buộc ràng, là người đi đường đã đến đích—There is no more suffering for him who has completed the journey; he who is sorrowless and wholly free from everything; who has destroyed all fetters.

91.   Kẻ dũng mãnh chánh niệm, tâm không ưa thích tại gia, ví như con ngỗng khi ra khỏi ao, chúng bỏ lại cái nhà ao hồ của chúng không chút nhớ tiếc—The mindful exert themselves, they do not enjoy in an abode; like swans who have left their pools without any regret.

92.   Những vị A-la-hán không chất chứa tài sản, biết rõ mục đích sự ăn uống, tự tại đi trong cảnh giới  “không, vô tướng, giải thoát” như  chim bay giữa hư không—Arhats for whom there is no accumulation, who reflect well over their food, who have perceived void, signless and deliverance, and their path is like that of birds in the air  which cannot be traced.

93.   Những vị A-la-hán, dứt sạch các hoặc lậu, không tham đắm uống ăn, tự tại đi trong cảnh giới “không, vô tướng, giải thoát” như chim bay giữa hư không—Arhats whose afflictions are destroyed, who are not attached to food, who have perceived void, signless and deliverance, and their path is like that of birds in the air which cannot be traced.

94.   Những vị A-la-hán đã tịch tịnh được các căn, như tên kỵ mã đã điều luyện được ngựa lành, nên không còn phiền não ngã mạn và được các hàng nhơn thiên kính mộ—The gods even pay homage to Arhats whose senses are subdued, like steeds well-trained by a charioteer, those whose pride and afflictions are destroyed.

95.   Những vị A-la-hán đã bỏ hết lòng sân hận, tâm như cõi đất bằng, lại chí thành kiên cố như nhân đà yết la, như ao báu không bùn, nên chẳng còn bị luân hồi xoay chuyển—Like the earth, Arhats who are balanced and well-disciplined, resent not. He is like a pool without mud; no new births are in store for him.

96.   Những vị A-la-hán ý nghiệp thường vắng lặng, ngữ nghiệp hành nghiệp thường vắng lặng, lại có chánh trí giải thoát, nên được an ổn luôn—Those Arhats whose mind is calm, whose speech and deed are calm. They have also obtained right knowing, they have thus become quiet men.

97.   Những vị A-la-hán chẳng còn phải tin ai, đã thấu hiểu đạo vô vi, dứt trừ vĩnh viễn nguyên nhân, cùng quả báo ràng buộc, lòng tham dục cũng xa lìa. Chính đó là bậc Vô thượng sĩ—The man who is not credulous, but knows the uncreated, who has cut off all links and retributions, and renounces all desires. He is indeed a supreme man.

98.   Dù ở xóm làng, dù ở rừng núi, dù ở đất bằng, dù ở gò trủng, dù ở biển cả hay đất khô, dù ở bất cứ chốn nào mà có vị A-la-hán, thì ở đó đầy dẫy cảnh tượng yên vui—In a village or in a forest, in a valley or on the hills, on the sea or on the dry land, wherever Arhats dwell, that place is delightful.

99.   Lâm dã là cảnh rất vui đối với vị A-la-hán, nhưng người đời chẳng ưa thích, trái lại dục lạc là cảnh ưa thích đối với người đời, vị A-la-hán lại lánh xa—For Arhats, delightful are the forests, where common people find no delight. There the passionless will rejoice, for they seek no desires nor sensual pleasures.

VIII.PHẨM NGÀN—THOUSAND

100. Tụng đến ngàn câu vô nghĩa, chẳng bằng một câu có nghĩa lý, nghe xong tâm liền thanh tịnh—A recitation composed of a thousand words without sense, is no better than one single beneficial word upon hearing which one is immediately pacified.

101. Tụng đến ngàn câu kệ vô nghĩa, chẳng bằng một câu kệ có nghĩa lý, nghe xong tâm liền thanh tịnh—One beneficial line by hearing it one is immediately pacified is better than a thousand verses with words without sense.

102. Tụng đến trăm câu kệ vô nghĩa, chẳng bằng một pháp cú, nghe xong tâm liền thanh tịnh—One single word of the Dharma by hearing it one is immediately pacified, is better than a hundred stanzas, comprising senseless words.

103. Thắng ngàn quân địch chưa thể gọi là thắng, tự thắng được mình mới là chiến công oanh liệt nhứt—One who conquers himself is greater than one who is able to conquer a thousand men in the battlefield.

104. Tự thắng mình còn vẻ vang hơn thắng kẻ khác. Muốn thắng mình phải luôn luôn chế ngự lòng tham dục—Self-conquest is, indeed, better than the conquest of all other people. To conquer onself, one must be always self-controlled and disciplined one’s action.

105. Dù là thiên thần, Càn thát bà, dù là Ma vương, hay Phạm thiên, không một ai chẳng thất bại trước người đã tự thắng—Neither the god, nor demigod, nor Mara, nor Brahma can win back the victory of a man who is self-subdued and ever lives in restraint.

106. Mỗi tháng bỏ ra hàng ngàn vàng để sắm vật hy sinh, tế tự cả đến trăm năm, chẳng bằng trong giây lát cúng dường bậc chân tu; cúng dường bậc chân tu trong giây lát thắng hơn tế tự quỷ thần cả trăm năm—Month after month, even though one makes an offerings of a thousand for a hundred years, yet it is no better than one moment that he pays homage to a saint who has perfected himself. .

107. Cả trăm năm ở tại rừng sâu thờ lửa, chẳng bằng trong giây lát cúng dường bậc chân tu; cúng dường bậc chân tu trong giây lát thắng hơn thờ lửa cả trăm năm—Should a man, for a hundred years, tend the sacrificial fire in the forest, yet it is no better than just one moment he honours the saint who has perfected himself; that honour is indeed better than a century of fire-sacrifice or fire-worship.

108. Suốt một năm bố thí cúng dường để cầu phước, công đức chẳng bằng một phần tư sự kính lễ bậc chính trực (chánh giác)—Whatever alms or offering a man has done for a year to seek merit, is no better than a single quarter of the reverence towards the righteous man.

109. Thường hoan hỷ, tôn trọng, kính lễ các bậc trưởng lão thì được tăng trưởng bốn điều: sống lâu, đẹp đẽ, tươi trẻ, khỏe mạnh—For a man who has the habit of constant honour and respect for the elder, four blessings will increase: longevity, beauty, happiness, and good health.

110. Sống trăm tuổi mà phá giới và buông lung, chẳng bằng sống chỉ một ngày mà trì giới, tu thiền định—To live a hundred years, immoral and uncontrolled, is no better than a single-day life of being moral and meditative.

111. Sống trăm tuổi mà thiếu trí huệ, không tu thiền, chẳng bằng sống chỉ một ngày mà đủ trí, tu thiền định—To live a hundred years without wisdom and control, is no better than a single-day life of being wise and meditative.

112. Sống trăm tuổi mà giải đãi không tinh tấn, chẳng bằng sống chỉ một ngày mà hăng hái tinh cần—To live a hundred years, idle and inactive, is no better than a single-day life of intense effort.

113. Sống trăm tuổi mà không thấy pháp vô thường sinh diệt, chẳng bằng sống chỉ một ngày mà được thấy pháp sinh diệt vô thường—To live a hundred years without comprehending how all things rise and pass away, is no better than a single-day life of seeing beginning and end of all things.

114. Sống trăm tuổi mà không thấy đạo tịch tịnh vô vi, chẳng bằng sống chỉ một ngày mà được thấy đạo tịch tịnh vô vi—To live a hundred years without seeing the immortal state, is no better than a single-day life of one who sees the deathless state (nirvana).

115. Sống trăm tuổi mà không thấy pháp tối thượng, chẳng bằng sống chỉ một ngày mà được thấy pháp tối thượng—To live a hundred years without seeing the Supreme Truth, is no better than a single-day life of someone who see the highest law.

IX.  PHẨM ÁC—EVIL

116. Hãy gấp rút làm lành, chế chỉ tâm tội ác. Hễ biếng nhác việc lành giờ phút nào thì tâm ưa chuyện ác giờ phút nấy—Let’s  hasten up to do good. Let’s restrain our minds from evil thoughts, for the minds of those who are slow in doing good actions delight in evil.

117. Nếu đã lỡ làm ác chớ nên thường làm hoài, chớ vui làm việc ác; hễ chứa ác nhứt định thọ khổ—If a person commits evil, let him not do it again and again; he should not rejoice therein, sorrow is the outcome of evil.

118. Nếu đã làm việc lành hãy nên thường làm mãi, nên vui làm việc lành; hễ chứa lành nhứt định thọ lạc—If a person does a meritorious deed, he should do it habitually, he should find pleasures therein, happiness is the outcome of merit.

Even an evil-doer sees good as long as evil deed has not yet ripened; but when his evil deed has ripened, then he sees the evil results.

Even a good person sees evil  as long as his good deed has not yet ripened; but when his good deed has ripened, then he sees the good results.

121. Chớ khinh điều ác nhỏ, cho rằng “chẳng đưa lại quả báo cho ta.” Phải biết giọt nước nhểu lâu ngày cũng làm đầy bình. Kẻ ngu phu sở dĩ đầy tội ác bởi chứa dồn từng khi ít mà nên—Do not disregard (underestimate) small evil, saying, “it will not matter to me.” By the falling of drop by drop, a water-jar is filled; likewise, the fool becomes full of evil, even if he gathers it little by little.

Kẻ trí sở dĩ toàn thiện bởi chứa dồn từng khi ít mà nên—Do not disregard small good, saying, “it will not matter to me.” Even by the falling of drop by drop, a water-jar is filled; likewise, the wise man, gathers his merit little by little.

123. Người đi buôn mang nhiều của báu mà thiếu bạn đồng hành, tránh xa con đường nguy hiểm làm sao, như kẻ tham sống tránh xa thuốc độc thế nào, thì các ngươi cũng phải tránh xa điều ác thế ấy—A merchant with great wealth but lacks of companions, avoids a dangerous route, just as one desiring to live avoids poison, one should shun evil things in the same manner.

124. Với bàn tay không thương tích, có thể nắm thuốc độc mà không bị nhiễm độc, với người không làm ác thì không bao giờ bị ác—With a hand without wound, one can touch poison; the poison does not afftect one who has no wound; nor is there ill for him who does no wrong.

125. Đem ác ý xâm phạm đến người không tà vạy, thanh tịnh và vô nhiễm, tội ác sẽ trở lại kẻ làm ác như ngược gió tung bụi—Whoever harms a harmless person who is pure and guiltless, the evil falls back upon that fool, like dust thrown against the wind.

126. Một số sinh ra từ bào thai, kẻ ác thì đọa vào địa ngục, người chính trực thì sinh lên chư thiên, nhưng cõi Niết bàn chỉ dành riêng cho những ai đã diệt sạch nghiệp sanh tử—Some are born in a womb; evil-doers are reborn in hells; the righteous people go to blissful states; the undefiled ones pass away into Nirvana.

127. Chẳng phải bay lên không trung, chẳng phải lặn xuống đáy bể, chẳng phải chui vào hang sâu núi thẳm, dù tìm khắp thế gian nầy, chẳng có nơi nào trốn khỏi ác nghiệp đã gây—Neither in the sky, nor in mid-ocean, nor in mountain cave, nowhere on earth where one can escape from the consequences of his evil deeds.

128. Chẳng phải bay lên không trung, chẳng phải lặn xuống đáy bể, chẳng phải chui vào hang sâu núi thẳm, dù tìm khắp thế gian nầy, chẳng rõ nơi nào trốn khỏi tử thần—Not in the sky, nor in mid-ocean, nor in a mountain cave, nowhere on earth where one can escape from death.

X.    PHẨM ĐAO TRƯỢNG—THE ROD OR PUNISHMENT.

129. Ai ai cũng sợ gươm đao, ai ai cũng sợ sự chết; vậy nên lấy lòng mình suy lòng người, chớ giết chớ bảo giết—All tremble at sword and rod, all fear death; comparing others with onerself, one should neither kill nor cause to kill.

130. Ai ai cũng sợ gươm đao, ai ai cũng thích được sống còn; vậy nên lấy lòng mình suy lòng người, chớ giết chớ bảo giết—All tremble at sword and rod, all love life; comparing others with oneself; one should not kill nor cause to kill.

131. Người nào cầu hạnh phúc cho mình mà lại lấy đao gậy phá hại hạnh phúc kẻ khác, thì sẽ không được hạnh phúc—Whoever seeks his own happiness, but harms others’ happiness, will not find felicity now and hereafter.

132. Người nào cầu hạnh phúc cho mình mà không lấy đao gậy phá hại hạnh phúc kẻ khác, thì sẽ được hạnh phúc—Whoever seeks his own happiness, but does not harm others’ happiness, will find happiness now and hereafter.

Those who are spoken to will respond in the same manner. Angry speech nourishes trouble. You will receive blows in exchange for blows.

Người kia chẳng làm sao tìm sự tranh cãi với ngươi được nữa—If like a cracked gong, you silence yourself, you already have attained Nirvana. No vindictiveness (quarrels) will be found in you.

135. Như với chiếc gậy, người chăn trâu xua trâu ra đồng, sự già sự chết cũng thế, thường xua chúng sanh đến tử vong—As with a rod, a cowherd drives his cows to pasture, even so do old age and death drive the life of beings.

Người ngu tự tạo ra nghiệp để chịu khổ, chẳng khác nào tự lấy lửa đốt mình—A fool does not realize when he commits wrong deeds; by his own deeds the stupid man is tormented, like one is lighting fires wherein he must be burnt one day.

137. Nếu lấy đao gậy hại người toàn thiện toàn nhân, lập tức kẻ kia phải thọ lấy đau khổ trong mười điều—He who takes the rod and harms a harmless person, will soon come to one of these ten stages:

138. Thống khổ về tiền tài bị tiêu mất, thân thể bị bại hoại, hoặc bị trọng bịnh bức bách—He will be subject to cruel suffering of infirmity, bodily injury, or serious sickness,

139. Hoặc bị tán tâm loạn ý, hoặc bị vua quan áp bách, hoặc bị vu trọng tội, hoặc bị quyến thuộc ly tán—Or loss of mind, or oppression by the king, or heavy accusation, or loss of family members or relatives,

Or destruction of wealth, or lightening fire fire burn his house, and after death will go to the hell.

141. Chẳng phải đi chân không, chẳng phải để tóc xù (bờm), chẳng phải xoa tro đất vào mình, chẳng phải tuyệt thực, chẳng nằm trên đất, chẳng phải để thân mình nhớp nhúa, cũng chẳng phải ngồi xổm mà người ta có thể trở nên thanh tịnh, nếu không dứt trừ nghi hoặc—Neither walking bare footed, nor matted locks, nor dirt, nor fasting, nor lying on the bare ground, nor dust, nor squatting on the heels, can purify a mortal who has not overcome his doubts.

142. Người nào nghiêm giữ thân tâm, chế ngự khắc phục ráo riết, thường tu phạm hạnh, không dùng đao gậy gia hại sanh linh, thì chính người ấy là một Thánh Bà la môn, là Sa môn, là Tỳ khưu vậy—He who strictly adorned, lived in peace, subdued all passions, controlled all senses, ceased to injure other beings, is indeed a holy Brahmin, an ascetic, a bhikshu.

Người đã làm được, họ khéo tránh hổ nhục như ngựa hay khéo tránh roi da—Rarely found in this world anyone who restrained by modesty, avoids reproach, as a well-trained horse avoids the whip.

144. Các ngươi hãy nỗ lực sám hối như ngựa đã hay còn thêm roi, hãy ghi nhớ lấy chánh tín, tịnh giới, tinh tiến, tam-ma-địa (thiền định) trí phân biệt Chánh pháp, và minh hành túc để tiêu diệt vô lượng thống khổ—Like a well-trained horse, touch by the whip, even so be strenuous and zealous. By faith, by virtue, by effort, by concentration, by investigation of the Truth, by being endowed with knowledge and conduct, and being mindful, get rid of this great suffering.

145. Người tưới nước lo dẫn nước, thợ làm tên lo uốn tên, thợ mộc lo nẩy mực cưa cây, người làm lành thì tự lo chế ngự—Irregators guide the water to their fields; fletchers bend the arrow; carpenters bend the wood, the virtuous people control themselves.

X.     PHẨM LÃO—OLD AGE

–-How can there be laughter, how can there be joy, when the whole world is burnt by the flames of passions and ignorance? When you are living in darkness, why wouldn’t you seek the light?

Is it only a pile of bones, a mass of sores, a heap-up of diseases? Let’s think about it for a moment, nothing lasts, nothing persists!

148. Cái hình hài suy già nầy là cái rừng tập trung bịnh tật, dễ hư nát. Đã có tụ tất có tán, có sinh tất có tử—This worn out body, a nest of diseases, perishable and subject to decay. This decomposed mass breaks to pieces, life indeed ends in death.

149. Trái hồ lô (trái bầu) về mùa thu thì khô tàn. Thân nầy cũng vậy, khi đã hư hoại thì chỉ còn một đống xương màu lông hạc; rõ thật chẳng có gì vui—Those bleaching bones are just like dried and empty gourds cast away in autumn. What pleasure is there in looking at them?

150. Thân nầy là cái thành xây bằng xương cốt và tô quét bằng máu thịt, để cất chứa sự già sự chết, ngã mạn và dối gian—This body is only a stronghold made of bones, covered with flesh and blood in which stored decay, death, pride and deceit.

Chỉ trừ thiện pháp của bậc thiện nhân là không bị suy giàvà cứ di chuyển từ người lành nầy sang người lành khác—Even brilliantly ornamented royal chariots wear out, so does the body reach its old age and loses its health and strength. But the Dharma of of the good never grows old. Thus do the Good say to the good.

152. Những người ít nghe kém học, suốt đời chỉ như trâu nái, gân thịt dẫu lớn mạnh mà trí tuệ không tăng thêm—A man of little learning grows old like an ox; his muscles grows but his wisdom does not grow.

153. Ta lang thang trong vòng luân hồi qua bao kiếp sống, tìm mãi mà không gặp kẻ làm nhà. Đau khổ thay kiếp sống cứ tái diễn mãi!—Wandering through many cycles of births and deaths in Samsara, looking for the builder of this house without success (in vain). How sorrowful to be born again and again!

House builder! You have been seen. You can not build house any longer. All your rafters of sins are broken, your ridge-pole of ignorance is shattered. My mind has attained the Supreme Nirvana, all desires are extinct.

155. Lúc thanh niên cường tráng đã không kiếm ra tài của, cũng chẳng lo tu hành, thì khi già cả chẳng khác gì con cò già bên bờ ao, chẳng kiếm ra mồi, nằm khô héo chết mòn—Those who have not led a religious life, who in youth have not acquired treasure, perish like  old herons standing sad at a pond without fish.

156. Lúc thanh niên cường tráng đã không kiếm ra tài của, cũng chẳng lo tu hành, nên khi già nằm xuống, dáng người như cây cung gẫy, cứ buồn than về dĩ vãng—Those who have not led a religious life, who in youth have not acquired treasure, like a broken bow lying and shining after the past.

XI.  PHẨM TỰ KỶ—THE SELF

157. Nếu tự biết thương mình, phải gắng tự bảo hộ, trong ba thời phải có một; người có trí nên tỉnh ngộ chớ mê man—If one holds oneself dear, one should protect oneself well. At least one among the three watches of the day, a wise man should be vigilant.

158. Trước hãy tự đặc mình vào Chánh đạo rồi sau giáo hóa kẻ khác, được như vậy mới tránh khỏi đều lầm lỗi xãy ra—Let one estalish oneself in the proper way, or learn what is right, and then instruct others. Such a wise man will not be defiled.

159. Nếu muốn khuyên người khác nên làm như mình, trước hãy tự sửa mình rồi sau sửa người, vì tự sửa mình vốn là điều khó nhứt—Before teaching others, one should act himself as what he teaches. It is easy to subdue others, but to subdue oneself seems very difficult.

Tự mình khéo tu tập mới đạt đến chỗ nương dựa nhiệm mầu—Oneself is indeed one’s own saviour, who else could be the saviour? With self-control and cultivation, one can obtain a wonderful saviour.

161. Ác nghiệp chính do mình tạo, từ mình sinh ra. Ác nghiệp làm hại kẻ ngu phu dễ dàng như kim cang phá hoại bảo thạch—The evil is done by oneself; it is self-born, it is self-nursed. Evil grinds the unwise as a diamond grinds a precious stone.

162. Sự phá giới làm hại mình như dây mang-la bao quanh cây Ta-la làm cho cây nầy khô héo. Người phá giới chỉ là người làm điều mà kẻ thù muốn làm cho mình—Breaking commandments is so harmful as a creeper is strangling a sala tree. A man who breaks commandments does to himself what an enemy would wish for him.

163. Việc hung ác thì dễ làm nhưng chẳng lợi gì cho ta, trái lại việc từ thiện có lợi cho ta thì lại rất khó làm—Bad deeds are easy to do, but they are harmful, not beneficial to oneself. On the contrary, it is very difficult to do that which is beneficial and good for oneself.

164. Những người ác tuệ ngu si, vì tâm tà kiến mà vu miệt giáo pháp A-la-hán, vu miệt người lành Chánh đạo và giáo pháp đức Như Lai để tự mang lấy bại hoại, như giống cỏ cách-tha hễ sinh hoa quả xong liền tiêu diệt—The foolish man who slanders the teachings of the Arhats, of the righteous and the Noble Ones. He follows false doctrine, ripens like the kashta reed, only for its own destruction.

By oneself the evil is done, by oneself one is defiled or purified. Purity or impurity depend on oneself. No one can purify another.

166. Chớ vì lợi cho kẻ khác mà quên hẳn lợi ích cho chính mình. Người biết lo ích lợi cho mình mới thường chuyên tâm vào những điều ích lợi—Let no one forget his own welfare for the sake of others’ welfare. One who perceives his own welfare, has the ability to intent on his own goals.

XIII.PHẨM THẾ GIAN

  THE WORLD

Do not follow the evil law, do not live in heedlessness. Do not embrace false views, do not be a world-upholder.

168. Hăng hái đừng buông lung, làm lành theo Chánh pháp. Người thực hành đúng Chánh pháp thì đời nầy vui đời sau cũng vui—Eagerly try not to be heedless, follow the path of righteousness. He who observes this practice lives happily both in this world and in the next.

Do not do evil. He who practices this, lives happily both in this world and in the next.

170. Người nào xem thế gian nầy  như bọt nước, như ảo ảnh thì sẽ chấm dứt mọi đau khổ và chẳng còn sợ thần chết kéo lôi—Look upon the world as one would look upon a bubble, just as one would look upon a mirage. If a man thus looks down upon the world, the king of death does not see him.

171. Giả sử thế gian nầy có được trang hoàng lộng lẫy như chiếc xe của vua đi nữa, thì trong số người đến xem, chỉ người ngu mới tham đắm, chứ kẻ trí nào hề bận tâm—Supposed this world is like a brilliantly ornamented royal chariot; the foolish are immersed in it, but the wise do not attach to it.

172. Người nào trước buông lung sau lại tinh tấn, người đó là ánh sáng chiếu cõi thế gian như vầng trăng ra khỏi mây mù—Whoever was formerly heedless and afterwards overcomes his sloth; such a person illuminates this world just like the moon when freed from clouds.

173. Người nào trước làm ác sau lại làm lành, người đó là ánh sáng chiếu cõi thế gian như vầng trăng ra khỏi mây mù—Whoever was formerly heedless and afterwards does good deeds; such a person illuminates this world just like the moon when freed from clouds.

174. Như chim thoát khỏi lưới, chẳng mấy con bay thẳng lên trời cao, trong thế gian nầy mù mịt chẳng mấy người sáng suốt trông thấy cao xa—This work is so dark that only a few can see it clearly, like birds escape from a net but very few of them fly up straight.

175. Con thiên nga chỉ bay được giữa không trung, người có thần thông chỉ bay được khỏi mặt đất, duy bậc đại trí, trừ hết ma quân mới bay được khỏi thế gian nầy—Swans can only fly in the sky, man who has supernatural powers can only go through air by their psychic powers. The wise rise beyond the world when they have conquered all kinds of Mara.

176. Những ai vi phạm đạo Nhất thừa, những ai ưa nói lời vọng ngữ, những ai không tin tưởng đời sau, thì chẳng có điều ác nào mà họ không làm được—Those who have transgressed the One Vehicle Law (the law of truthfulness), who tell lie, who don’t believe in the law of cause and effect, there is no evil that they will not do.

177. Người sân tham không thể sanh lên cõi trời, người ngu si không ưa tán dương việc bố thí, nhưng người trí thấy bố thí lại tùy hỷ công đức và tương lai họ sẽ dự hưởng phần an lạc—Misers cannot go to the heaven, fools cannot indeed praise charity. A wise man rejoices in alsmgiving and thus becomes happy thereafter.

178. Người thống suất cõi đất, người làm chủ chư thiên, hết thảy vị thế chủ ấy, chẳng sánh kịp một vị đã chứng quả Tu-đà-hoàn—Better than the lord of the earth, better than the lord of the heaven, better than all these lords is the fruit of a Stream-Winner.

XIV.PHẨM PHẬT ĐÀ

  THE BUDDHA

By what track can you lead him? The Awakened, the all perceiving, the trackless?

180. Người dứt hết trói buộc, ái dục còn khó cám dỗ được họ, huống Phật trí mênh mông không dấu tích, các ngươi lấy gì mà hòng cám dỗ được ư?—It is difficult to seduce the one that has eradicated all cravings and desires. By which way can you seduce him? The trackless Buddha of infinite range.

181. Người trí thường ưa tu thiền định, ưa xuất gia và ở chỗ thanh vắng. Người có Chánh niệm và Chánh giác bao giờ cũng được sự ái kính của Thiên nhơn—Even the gods envy the wise ones who are intent on meditation, who delight in the peace of renunciation.

182. Được sinh làm người là khó, được sống còn là khó, được nghe Chánh pháp là khó, được gặp Phật ra đời là khó—It is difficult to obtain birth as a human being; it is difficult to have a life of mortals; it is difficult to hear the Correct Law; it is even rare to meet the Buddha.

Ấy lời chư Phật dạy—Not to do evil, to do good, to purify one’s mind, this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

184. Chư Phật thường dạy: “Niết bàn là quả vị tối thượng, nhẫn nhục là khổ hạnh tối cao. Xuất gia mà não hại người khác, không gọi là xuất gia Sa-môn.”—The Buddhas say: “Nirvana is supreme, forebearance is the highest austerity. He is not a recluse who harms another, nor is he an ascetic who oppresses others.”

185. Chớ nên phỉ báng, đừng làm não hại, giữ giới luật tinh nghiêm, uống ăn có chừng mực, riêng ở chỗ tịch tịnh, siêng tu tập thiền định; ấy lời chư Phật dạy—Not to slander, not to harm, but to restrain oneself in accordance with the fundamental moral codes, to be moderate in eating, to dwell in secluded abode, to meditate on higher thoughts, this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

186. Giả sử mưa xuống bạc vàng cũng chẳng thỏa mãn được lòng tham dục. Người trí đã biết rõ sự dâm dật vui ít khổ nhiều—Even a shower of gold pieces cannot satisfy lust. A wise man knows that lusts have a short taste, but long suffering.

187. Thế nên, dù sự dục lạc ở cõi trời, ngươi cũng chớ sanh tâm mong cầu. Đệ tử các đấng Giác ngộ, chỉ mong cầu diệt trừ ái dục mà thôi—Even in heavenly pleasures the wise man finds no delight. The disciple of the Supremely Enlightened One delights only in the destruction of craving.

188. Vì sợ hãi bất an mà đến quy-y thần núi, quy-y rừng cây, quy-y miễu thờ thọ thần—Men were driven by fear to go to take refuge in the mountains, in the forests, and in sacred trees.

189. Nhưng đó chẳng phải là chỗ nương dựa yên ổn, là chỗ quy-y tối thượng, ai quy-y như thế khổ não vẫn còn nguyên—But that is not a safe refuge or no such refuge is supreme. A man who has gone to such refuge, is not delivered from all pain and afflictions.

190. Trái lại, quy-y Phật, Pháp, Tăng, phát trí huệ chơn chánh—On the contrary, he who take refuge in the Buddhas, the Dharma and the angha, sees with right knowledge.

191. Hiểu thấu bốn lẽ mầu: biết khổ, biết khổ nhân, biết khổ diệt và biết tám chi Thánh đạo, diệt trừ hết khổ não—With clear understanding of the four noble truths: suffering, the cause of suffering, the destruction of suffering, and the eighfold noble path which leads to the cessation of suffering.

192. Đó là chỗ quy-y an ổn, là chỗ quy-y tối thượng. Ai quy-y được như vậy mới giải thoát khổ đau—That is the secure refuge, the supreme refuge. He who has gone to that refuge, is released from all suffering.

Phàm ở đâu có vị Thánh nhơn ra đời thì gia tộc đó được an lành—It is difficult to find a man with great wisdom, such a man is not born everywhere. Where such a wise man is born, that family prospers.

194. Hạnh phúc thay đức Phật ra đời! Hạnh phúc thay diễn nói Chánh pháp! Hạnh phúc thay Tăng già hòa hợp! Hạnh phúc thay dõng tiến đồng tu!—Happy is the birth of  Buddhas! Happy is the teaching of the True Law! Happy is the harmony in the sangha! Happy is the discipline of the united ones!

195. Kẻ nào cúng dường những vị đáng cúng dường, hoặc chư Phật hay đệ tử, những vị thoát ly hư vọng, vượt khỏi hối hận lo âu—Whoever pays homage and offering, whether to the Buddhas or their disciples, those who have overcome illusions and got rid of grief and lamentation.

196. Công đức của người ấy đã cúng dường các bậc tịch tịnh vô úy ấy, không thể kể lường—The merit of him who reverences such peaceful and fearless Ones cannot be measured by anyone.

XV.PHẨM LẠC—HAPPINESS

Happily do we live without hatred among the hateful! Among hateful men we dwell unhating!

Happily do we live in good health among the ailing! Among the ailing we dwell in good health!

Happily do we live without greed for sensual pleasures among the greedy! Among the greedy we dwell free from greed!

Happily do we live without any hindrances. We shall always live in peace and joy as the gods of the Radiant Realm.

201. Thắng lợi thì bị thù oán, thất bại thì bị đau khổ; chẳng màng tới thắng bại, sẽ sống một đời hòa hiếu an vui—Victory breeds hatred, defeat breeds suffering; giving up both victory and defeat will lead us to a peaceful  life.

202. Không lửa nào bằng lửa tham dục, không ác nào bằng ác sân si, không khổ nào bằng khổ ngũ ấm, và không vui nào bằng vui Niết bàn—There is no fire like lust; no evil like hatred. There is no ill like the body; no bliss higher than Nirvana.

203. Đói là chứng bệnh lớn, vô thường là nổi khổ lớn; biết được đúng đắn như thế, đạt đến Niết bàn vui tối thượng—Hunger is the greatest disease, aggregates are the greatest suffering. Knowing this as it really is, the wise realize Nirvana: supreme bliss.

204. Vô bệnh là điều rất lợi, biết đủ là kẻ rất giàu, thành tín là nơi chí thân, Niết bàn là vui tối thượng—Good health is a great benefit, contentment is the richest, trust is the best kinsmen, Nirvana is the highest bliss.

205. Ai đã từng nếm được mùi độc cư, ai đã từng nếm được mùi tịch tịnh, người ấy càng ưa nếm pháp vị để xa lìa mọi tội ác, sợ hãi—He who has tasted the flavour of seclusion and tranquility, will prefer to the taste of the joy of the Dharma, and to be free from fear and sin.

Bởi không gặp kẻ ngu si nên người kia thường hoan hỷ—To meet the sage is good, to live with them is ever happy. If a man has not ever seen the foolish, he may ever be happy.

Ở chung với người trí khác nào hội ngộ với người thân—He who companies with  fools grieves for a long time. To be with the foolish is ever painful as with an enemy. To associate  with the wise is ever happy like meeting with kinsfolk.

Therefore, one should be with the wise, the learned, the enduring, the dutiful and the noble. To be with a man of such virtue and intellect as the moon follows the starry path.

 XVI.PHẨM HỶ-ÁI—AFFECTION

209. Chuyên làm những việc không đáng làm, nhác tu những điều cần tu, bỏ việc lành mà chạy theo dục lạc, người như thế dù có hâm mộ kẻ khác đã cố gắng thành công, cũng chỉ là hâm mộ suông—He who applies himself to that which should be avoided, not cultivate what should be cultivated; forgets the good, but goes after pleasure. It’s only an empty admiration when he says he admires people who exert themselves in meditation.

210. Chớ kết giao với người đáng ưa, chớ kết giao với người không đáng ưa: không gặp được người thương yêu là khổ, mà gặp phải người cừu oán cũng khổ—Be not friend with the pleasant, nor with the unpleasant. Not seeing what is pleasant is painful; seeing what is unpleasant is painful.

211. Thế nên chớ đắm yêu, vì đắm yêu bị biệt ly là khổ. Nếu không còn những niệm yêu ghét, tức không điều gì ràng buộc được—Therefore, one should hold  nothing pleasant, for separation from those is suffering. Those who hold nothing pleasant and unpleasant have no fetters.

212. Từ hỷ ái sinh lo, từ hỷ ái sinh sợ; xa lìa hết hỷ ái, chẳng còn lo sợ gì—From pleasure springs grief; from pleasure springs fear. For him who is free from pleasure, there will be neither grief, nor fear.

213. Từ tham ái sinh lo, từ tham ái sinh sợ; xa lìa hết tham ái, chẳng còn lo sợ gì—From affection springs grief; from affection springs fear. For him who is free from affection, there will be neither grief nor fear.

214. Từ tham dục sinh lo, từ tham dục sinh sợ; xa lìa hết tham dục, chẳng còn lo sợ gì—From desire springs grief; from desire springs fear. For him who is free from desire, will be neither grief nor fear.

217. Đầy đủ giới hạnh và Chánh kiến, an trú Chánh pháp, rõ lý chơn thường và viên mãn các công hạnh, là người đáng kính mến—He who is perfect in virtue and insight, and estalished in the Correct Law, has realized the Truth and fulfils his own duties. He is trully admired by everyone.

218. Khát cầu pháp ly ngôn, sung mãn tâm lự sát, không đắm mê dục lạc, ấy là bậc thượng lưu—He who has developed a wish for the Nirvana; he whose mind is thrilled with the three fruits (Sotapatti, Sakadagami and Anagami), he whose mind is not bound by material pleasures, such a man is called an “Upstream-bound One.”

219. Người khác ly hương lâu ngày, khi từ phương xa trở về yên ổn được bà con thân hữu đón mừng thế nào—A man who has gone away for a long time and returned safe from afar, his kinsmen and friends welcome him on his arrival.

220. Thì người tạo phước nghiệp cũng vậy, khi từ cõi đời nầy sang cõi đời khác, phước nghiệp của họ là kẻ thân hữu đón mừng họ—Likewise, a man’s good deeds will receive the well-doer who has gone from this world to the next, as kinsmen and friends receive a dear one on his return.

XVII.PHẨM PHẪN NỘ—ANGER

221. Xa bỏ lòng giận dữ, trừ diệt tánh kiêu căng, giải thoát mọi ràng buộc, không chấp trước danh sắc; người không có một vật chi ấy, sự khổ chẳng còn theo dõi được—One should give up anger; one should abandon pride. One should overcome all fetters. No suffering befall him who calls nothing his own.

222. Người nào ngăn được cơn giận dữ nổi lên như dừng được chiếc xe đang chạy mạnh, mới là kẻ chế ngự giỏi, ngoài ra chỉ là kẻ cầm cương hờ mà thôi—He who controls his anger which arises as a rolling chariot. He is a true charioteer. Other people are only holding the rein.

223. Lấy từ bi thắng nóng giận, lấy hiền lành thắng hung dữ, lấy bố thí thắng xan tham, lấy chơn thật thắng ngoa ngụy—Conquer anger by love; conquer evil by good; conquer stingy by giving; conquer the liar by truth.

One should not be angry. One should give when asked to. These are three good deeds that help carry men the realm of heaven.

225. Không làm hại người thanh tịnh, thường chế phục thân tâm, thì đạt đến nơi chẳng chết; chẳng còn ưu bi—Those sages who do no harm living beings, who always control their bodies, go to the deathless place where there is no more sorrow.

226. Những người thường giác tỉnh, thường tu tập chuyên cần, thường để chí hướng tới Niết bàn, thì mọi phiền não đều dứt sạch—Those  who are ever watchful, who always cultivate to train their minds and to discipline themselves, their defilements will come to an end.

There is an old saying, it is not one of today only: “They blame those who sit silent, they blame those who speak too much. They blame those who speak little too.” There is no one who is not blamed in this world.

There never was, there never will be, nor is there now, a person who is wholly blamed or wholly praised.

229. Cứ mỗi buổi mai thức dậy tự biết phản tỉnh, hành động không sai quấy, trí tuệ hiền minh và giới hạnh thanh tịnh, đó là người đáng được kẻ trí tán dương—Examining day by day, the wise praise him who is of flawless life, intelligent, endowed with knowledge and virtue.

230. Phẩm đúng loại vàng Diêm phù ai lại chê bai được? Hạnh đúng Bà la môn, chư thiên nào lại không tán thưởng ?—Who would dare to blame him who is like a piece of pure gold? Even the gods and Brahma praise him.

231. Gìn giữ thân đừng nóng giận, điều phục thân hành động, xa lìa thân làm ác, dùng thân tu hạnh lành—One should guard against the bodily anger, or physical action, and should control the body. One should give up evil conduct of the body. One should be of good bodily conduct.

232. Gìn giữ lời nói đừng nóng giận, điều phục lời nói chánh chơn, xa lìa lời nói thô ác, dùng lời nói tu hành—One should guard against the anger of the tongue; one should control the tongue. One should give up evil conduct in speech. One should be of good conduct in speech.

233. Gìn giữ ý đừng nóng giận, điều phục ý tinh thuần, xa lìa ý hung ác, dùng ý để tu chân—One should guard against  the anger of the mind; one should control the mind. One should give up evil conduct of the mind. One should practice virtue with the mind.

234. Người trí chẳng những lo điều phục thân nghhiệp, còn điều phục ngôn ngữ và tâm ý, cả ba nghiệp thảy điều phục hoàn toàn—The wise are not only restrained in deed; they are also restrained in speech, and in mind too.

XVIII.PHẨM CẤU UẾ—IMPURITIES

235. Ngươi nay đã giống ngọn lá héo khô; Diêm ma sứ giả (tử thần) ở sát bên mình. Ngươi đang đứng trước ngưỡng cửa chết, bước lữ đồ ngươi thiếu hẳn tư lương—You are like a withered leaf now. The messenger of death is waiting for you. You are standing at the threshold of your departure, but you have no provision for your journey.

236. Ngươi hãy tự tạo cho mình một hòn đảo an toàn, gấp rút tinh cần làm kẻ khôn ngoan, gột sạch bao nhiêu phiền não trần cấu, để bước lên Thánh cảnh hàng chư thiên—Make yourself an island. Be wise to strive quickly! When you cleanse your impurities, you will enter into the heavenly world of the Ariyas (gods).

237. Đời sống ngươi nay sắp lụn tàn, ngươi đang dịch bước gần Diêm vương, giữa đường đã không nơi ngơi nghỉ, bước lữ hành ngươi cũng thiếu hẳn tư lương—Your life has come to an end now. You stand in death presence. There is no resting place for you on the way, but you have no provision (are not prepared) for your journey.

238. Ngươi hãy tạo lấy cho mình một hòn đảo an toàn, gấp rút tinh cần làm kẻ khôn ngoan, gột sạch bao nhiêu phiền não trần cấu, chớ trở lui đường sanh lão nguy nan—Make an island for yourself. Be wise to strive quickly! When you cleanse your impurities, you will not come back again to birth and old age.

239. Hết sát na nầy đến sát na khác, người trí lo gột trừ dần những cấu uế nơi mình như anh thợ vàng cần mẫn lọc trừ quặng bã khỏi chất vàng ròng—From ksana to ksana, a wise person should remove his own impurities as a goldsmith removes the dross of silver.

240. Như sét do sắt sinh ra rồi trở lại ăn sắt, cũng như ác nghiệp do người ta gây ra rồi trở lại dắt người ta đi vào cõi ác—As rust sprung from iron eats itself away when arisen, just like ill deeds lead the doer to a miserable state.

241. Không tụng tập là vết nhơ của kinh điển, không siêng năng là vết nhơ của nghiệp nhà, biếng nhác là vết nhơ của thân thể và nơi ăn chốn ở, phóng túng là vết nhơ của phép hộ vệ—Non-recitation is the rust of incantation; non-repair is the rust of houses; sloth is the rust of bodily beauty; carelessness is the rust of the cultivator (watcher).

242. Tà hạnh là vết nhơ của người đàn bà, xan lẫn là vết nhơ của sự bố thí; đối với cõi nầy hay cõi khác, thì tội ác lại chính là vết nhơ—Misconduct is the taint of a woman; stinginess is the taint of a donor. Taints are indeed all evil things, both in this world and in the next.

Các ngươi có trừ hết vô minh mới trở thành hàng Tỳ kheo thanh tịnh—The worst taint is ignorance, the greatest taint. Oh! Bhikshu! Cast aside this taint and become taintless.

244. Sống không biết xấu hổ, sống lỗ mãng trơ trẻn như quạ diều, sống chê bai kẻ khác, sống đại đởm khoa trương, sống ngạo mạn tà ác, sống như thế ấy chẳng khó khăn gì—Life is easy for the shameless one who is impudent as a crow, back-biting, arrogant and evil.

245. Sống biết hổ thẹn, thường cầu thanh tịnh, sống không đam mê dục lạc, sống khiêm tốn, sống trong sạch, sống dồi dào kiến thức, sống như thế mới thật khó làm—But life is hard for a modest, for one who seeks purity, one who is detached, humble, clean and clear thinking.

246. Trong thế gian nầy, ai hay sát sinh, hay nói dối, hay lấy cắp, hay phạm dâm, hay rượu chè say sưa—He who in this world destroys life, tells lie, takes others’ wealth, commits adultery, is addicted to intoxicating liquors.

247.  Ai có các hành vi đó, tức đã tự đào bỏ thiện căn của mình ngay ở cõi đời nầy—A person who has such actions, digs up his own good roots right in this life.

Vậy các ngươi chớ tham, chớ làm điều phi pháp mà phải sa vào thống khổ đời đời—You should remember this: “Indiscipline begets evil (don’t try to stop evil is not different from doing evil).” Don’t let greed and wickedness drag you to  grief for a long time.

249. Vì có tín tâm hoan hỷ nên người ta mới bố thí, trái lại kẻ có tâm ganh ghét người khác được ăn, thì ngày hoặc đêm kẻ kia không thể nào định tâm được—Some people give according to their faith, or according to their pleasure. He who is envious of others’ food and drink, will not attain tranquility by day or by night.

250. Nhưng kẻ nào đã cắt được, nhổ được, diệt được tâm tưởng ấy, thì ngày hoặc đêm, kẻ kia đều được định tâm—He who fully cut off, uprooted and destroyed such feeling, gain peace by day and by night.

251. Không lửa nào dữ bằng lửa tham dục, không cố chấp nào bền bằng tâm sân giận, không lưới nào trói buộc bằng lưới ngu si, không giòng sông nào đắm chìm bằng sông ái dục—There is no fire like passion, no grip like hatred, no net like ignorance, no river like craving.

252. Thấy lỗi nguời thì dễ, thấy lỗi mình mới khó. Lỗi người ta cố phanh tìm như tìm thóc trong gạo, còn lỗi mình ta cố che dấu như kẻ cờ gian bạc lận thu dấu quân bài—It is easy to see the faults of others, but it is difficult to perceive our own faults. A man winnows his neighbor’s faults like chaff, but hides his own, as a dishonest gambler conceals a losing dice.

253. Nếu thấy lỗi người thì tâm ta dễ sinh nóng giận mà phiền não tăng thêm, nếu bỏ đi thì phiền não cũng xa lánh—He who sees others’ faults, is easy to get irritable and increases afflictions. If we abandon such a habit, afflictions will also be gone.

Among externalists, there is no track in the air. There is no saint (true monk). Sentient beings delight in worldly vanity. The Tathagatas are free from worldly vanity.

255. Giữa hư không làm gì có dấu vết, trong ngoại đạo làm gì có Sa-môn, năm uẩn thì không thường trú mà Như Lai thì chẳng loạn động bao giờ—There is no track in the air. Among externalists there is no saint. The five aggregates are changing, not eternal. The tathagatas are never shaken.

XIX.PHẨM PHÁP TRỤ--  THE  RIGHTEOUS

256. Sự lỗ mãng đâu phải hạnh của người phụng thờ Chánh pháp; vậy các ngươi cần biện biệt cho rõ đâu chánh và đâu tà—Violence is not dharma; he who uses it is not righteous. A wise man should distinguish both right and wrong.

Kẻ trí nhờ hộ trì Chánh pháp nên gọi là người an trụ Chánh pháp—Non-violence is Dharma; he who uses it is righteous. An intelligent person who is a guardian of the law, is called one who abides by the law.

258. Chẳng phải cậy nhiều lời mà cho là người có trí, nhưng an tịnh không cừu oán, không sợ hãi mới là người có trí—A man is not called a learned man because he talks much. He who is peaceful, without hatred and fearless, is called learned and wise.

259. Chẳng phải cậy nhiều lời mà cho là người hộ trì Chánh pháp, nhưng tuy ít học mà do thân thực thấy Chánh pháp, không buông lung, mới là người hộ trì Chánh pháp—A man is not called a guardian of the Dharma because he talks much. He who hears little and sees Dharma mentally, acts the Dharma well,  and does not neglect the Dharma, is indeed, a follower in the Dharma.

260.  Trưởng lão, chẳng phải vì bạc đầu. Nếu chỉ vì tuổi tác cao mà xưng trưởng lão, thì đó chỉ là xưng xuông—A man is not called an elder because his hair is gray. Ripe and wise is he in age.

261. Đủ kiến giải chân thật, giữ trọn các pháp hành, không sát hại sinh linh, lo tiết chế điều phục, đó mới là có trí: trừ hết các cấu nhơ, mới đáng danh trưởng lão—A man in whom are truth, virtue, harmlessness, restraint and control, that wise man who is steadfast and free from impurity, is indeed called an elder.

262. Những người hư ngụy, tật đố và xan tham, tuy có biện tài lưu loát, tướng mạo đoan trang cũng chẳng phải là người lương thiện—A man who is jealous, selfish, and deceitful does not become good-natured by mere eloquence, nor by handsome appearance.

263. Chỉ nhờ trừ diệt tận gốc lòng sân hận, mới là người lương thiện—Only he who eradicates hatred, is indeed called good-natured.

264. Người vọng ngữ về pháp giới, dù cạo tóc chưa phải là sa-môn; huống còn chất đầy tham dục, làm sao thành được bậc sa-môn?—Not by a shaven head does an undisciplined man who utters lies on the Dharma, become a monk. How can one who is full of  desire and greed be a monk?

265. Người nào dứt hết các điều ác, không luận lớn hay nhỏ; nhờ dứt hết các ác, mà được gọi sa-môn—A man who wholly subdues evil deeds, both small and big, is called a monk because he is a subduer of his passion.

266. Chỉ mang bình khất thực, đâu phải là Tỳ kheo! Chỉ làm nghi thức tôn giáo, cũng chẳng Tỳ Kheo vậy!—A man who only asks others for alms is not a mendicant! Not even if he has professed the whole Law.

267. Bỏ thiện và bỏ ác, chuyên tu hạnh thanh tịnh, lấy “biết” mà ở đời, mới thật là Tỳ Kheo—A man who has transcended both good and evil; who follows the whole code of morality; who lives with understanding in this world, is indeed called a bhikshu.

268. Kẻ ngu muội vô trí, dù làm thinh cũng không gọi được là tịch tịnh—A man who is dull and ignorant, by silence alone,  does not become a sage.

269. Kẻ trí  tuệ sáng suốt như bàn cân, biết cân nhắc điều thiện lẽ ác mà chọn lành bỏ dữ, mới gọi là người tịch tịnh. Biết được cả nội giới và ngoại giới nên gọi là người tịch tịnh—A wise man is the one who weighs what is thought worthy to be weighed. One who understands both worlds, is called a sage.

270. Còn sát hại chúng sanh, đâu được xưng là Ariya (hiền đức cao thượng)? Không sát hại chúng sanh mới gọi là Ariya—A man is not one of the Noble because he harms living beings. Through his harmlessness towards all living creatures is he called a Noble.

271. Chẳng phải do giới luật đầu đà, chẳng phải do nghe nhiều học rộng, chẳng phải do chứng được tam muội, chẳng phải do ở riêng một mình, đã vội cho là “hưởng được cái vui xuất gia, phàm phu không bì kịp.”—Not only by mere morality and austerities, nor by much learning, nor even by serene meditation, nor by secluded lodging, thinking “I enjoy the bliss of renunciation, which no common people can know.”

272. Các ngươi chớ vội tin những điều ấy khi mê lầm phiền não của các ngươi chưa trừ—Do not be confident as such until all afflictions die out.

XX.PHẨM ĐẠO—THE PATH

Cụ nhãn là bậc thù thắng hơn các bậc Thánh hiền—The best of paths is the Eightfold Path. The best of truths are the Four Noble Truths. Non-attachment is the best of states. The best of men is he who has eyes to see.

Các ngươi thuận làm theo, thì bọn ma bị rối loạn—This is the only way. There is no other way that leads to the purity of vision. You follow this way, Mara is helpless before it.

275. Các ngươi thuận tu theo Chánh đạo trên này, thì khổ não sẽ dứt hết, và biết rằng Đạo ta nói có sức trừ diệt chông gay—Entering upon that path, you will end your suffering. The way was taught by me when I understood the removal of thorns (arrows of grief).

Sự trói buộc của ma vương sẽ tùy sức thiền định của các ngươi mà được cỡi mở—You should make an effort by yourself! The Tathagatas are only teachers. The Tathagatas cannot set free anyone. The meditative ones, who enter the way, are delivered from the bonds of Mara.

Đó là Đạo thanh tịnh—All conditioned, or created things are transient. One who perceives this with wisdom, ceases grief and achieves liberation. This is the path to purity.

Đó là Đạo thanh tịnh—All conditioned things are suffering. One who perceives this with wisdom, ceases grief and achieves liberation. This is the path of purity.

Đó là Đạo thanh tịnh—All conditioned things are without a real self. One who perceives this with wisdom, ceases grief and achieves liberation. This is the path of purity.

280. Khi đáng nỗ lực, không nỗ lực, thiếu niên cường tráng đã lười biếng, ý chí tiêu trầm và nhu nhược: kẻ biếng nhác làm gì có trí để ngộ Đạo—One who does not strive when it is time to strive, who though young and strong but slothful with thoughts depressed; such a person never realizes the path.

281. Thận trọng lời nói, kềm chế ý nghĩ, thân không làm ác, ba nghiệp thanh tịnh, là được Đạo Thánh Nhơn—Be watchful of speech, control the mind, don’t let the body do any evil. Let purify these three ways of action and achieve the path realized by the sages.

282. Tu Du-già thì trí phát, bỏ Du-già thì tuệ tiêu. Biết rõ hay lẽ này thế nào là đắc thất, rồi nỗ lực thực hành, sẽ tăng trưởng thêm trí tuệ—From meditation arises wisdom. Lack of meditation wisdom is gone. One who knows this twofold road of gain and loss, will conduct himself to increase his wisdom.

283. Hãy đốn rừng dục vọng, chớ đốn cây thọ lâm; từ dục vọng sinh ra lo sợ, hãy thoát ngoài rừng dục vọng—Cut down the whole forest of passion, but not  real trees. From the forest of desire springs fear. Let cut down the forest and be free !

284. Những sợi dây tình giữa gái trai chưa dứt thì tâm còn bị buộc ràng, như  trâu con còn bú sữa, thì chẳng rời vú mẹ bao giờ—For as long as the smallest desire for women is not cut down, so long his mind still sticks to the world, like a sucking calf sticks to its mother-cow.

285. Tự mình dứt hết ái tình, như lấy tay bẻ cành sen thu; siêng tu Đạo tịch tịnh. Đó là Niết bàn mà đức Thiện thệ đã truyền dạy—Cut down the love, as though you plucked an autumn lily with the fingers. Cultivate the path of peace. That is the Nirvana which expounded by the Auspicious One.

286. “Mùa mưa ta ở đây, đông hạ ta cũng ở đây,” đấy là tâm tưởng của hạng người ngu si, không tự giác những gì nguy hiểm—Here I shall live in the rainy season, here in the winter and the summer. These are the words of the fool. He fails to realize the danger (of his final destination).

287. Người đắm yêu con cái và súc vật thì tâm thường mê hoặc, nên bị tử thần bắt đi như xóm làng đang say ngủ bị cơn nước lũ lôi cuốn mà không hay—Death descends and carries away that man of drowsy mind greedy for children and cattle, just like flood sweeps away a sleeping village.

288. Một khi tử thần đã đến, chẳng có thân thuộc nào có thể thế thay, dù cha con thân thích chẳng làm sao cứu hộ—Nothing can be saved, nor sons, nor a father, nor even relatives; there is no help from kinsmen can save a man from death.

289. Biết rõ lý lẽ trên, người trí hãy gắng trì giới, thấu hiểu đường Niết bàn, mau làm cho thanh tịnh—Realizing this fact, a wise man quickly clears the way that leads to Nirvana.

XXI.PHẨM TẠP—  MISCELLANEOUS

290. Nếu bỏ vui nhỏ mà được hưởng vui lớn, kẻ trí sẽ làm như thế—If by giving up a small happiness or pleasure, one may behold a larger joy. A far-seeing and wise man will do this (a wise man will leave the small pleasure and look for a larger one).

He who wishes his own happiness by hurting others, or by making others unhappy, will be bound by hatred. He himself is entangled and gets trapped in the hatred.

292. Việc đáng làm không làm, việc không đáng lại làm, những người phóng túng ngạo mạn, lậu tập mãi tăng thêm—What should have been done is left undone; what should not have been done is done. This is the way the arrogant and wicked people increase their grief.

293. Thường quan sát tự thân, không làm việc không đáng, việc đáng gắng chuyên làm, thì khổ đau lậu tập dần tiêu tan—Those who always earnestly practice controlling of the body, follow not what should not be done, and constantly do what should be done. This is the way the mindful and wise people end all their sufferings and impurities.

294. Hãy diệt mẹ (ái dục) và cha (kiêu căng), diệt hai dòng sát-đế-lợi, diệt Vương quốc, luôn cả quần thần mà hướng về Bà-la-môn vô ưu—Let’s kill the mother of craving, the father of arrogance, two warrior kings of wrong views of eternalism and nihilism. Let’s destroy the kingdom of senses and officials of attachments. Let’s turn to the Brahman of ungrief.

295. Hãy diệt mẹ (ái dục) và cha (kiêu căng), diệt hai dòng Bà-la-môn, diệt luôn hổ tướng “nghi” thứ năm mà hướng về Bà-la-môn vô ưu—Let’s kill the mother of craving, the father of arrogance, two Brahaman kings of the wrong views of eternalism and nihilism. Let’s destroy the official of Doubt and turn to the ungrieving Brahman.

296. Đệ tử Kiều Đáp Ma, phải luôn tự tỉnh giác, vô luận ngày hay đêm, thường niệm tưởng Phật Đà—The disciples of Gotama are always well awake. Those who always contemplate the Enlightened One by day and night.

297. Đệ tử Kiều Đáp Ma, phải luôn tự tỉnh giác, vô luận ngày hay đêm, thường niệm tưởng Đạt Ma—The disciples of Gotama are always well awake. Those who always contemplate the Dharma by day and night.

298. Đệ tử Kiều Đáp Ma, phải luôn tự tỉnh giác, vô luận ngày hay đêm, thường niệm tưởng Tăng già—The disciples of Gotama are always awake. Those who always contemplate the Sangha by day and night.

299. Đệ tử Kiều Đáp Ma, phải luôn tự tỉnh giác, vô luận ngày hay đêm, thường niệm tưởng sắc thân—The disciples of Gotama are always awake. Those who always contemplate the body by day and night.

300. Đệ tử Kiều Đáp Ma, phải luôn tự tỉnh giác, vô luận ngày hay đêm, thường vui điều bất sát—The disciples of Gotama are always awaken. Those who always contemplate delight in harmlessness or compassion by day and night.

301. Đệ tử Kiều Đáp Ma, phải luôn tự tỉnh giác, vô luận ngày hay đêm, thường ưa tu thiền quán—The disciples of Gotama are always awaken. Those who always contemplate delight in meditation by day and night.

Vậy các ngươi hãy giác ngộ để đừng qua lại trong vòng thống khổ ấy—It is difficult to renounce the world. It is difficult to be a householder. It is painful to associate with those who are not friends. It is painful to be wandering in the samsara forever. Reaching the enlightenment and let wander no more! Let’s suffer no more!

303. Chánh tín mà giới hạnh, được danh dự và thánh tài, người nào được như thế, đến đâu cũng tôn vinh—He who is full of faith and virtue, possessed of honor and holy wealth, revered and honoured wherever he goes.

304. Làm lành thì danh được vang xa, tỏ rạng như lên núi tuyết, làm ác thì tối tăm như bắn cung ban đêm—Good men shine, even afar like the peaks of Himalaya, but wicked men fade away just like the arrow shot by night.

305. Ngồi một mình, nằm một mình, đi đứng một mình không buồn chán, một mình tự điều luyện, vui trong chốn rừng sâu—He who sits alone, sleeps alone, walks and stands alone, unwearied; he controls himself, will find joy in the forest.

XXII.PHẨM ĐỊA NGỤC—WOEFUL STATE

306. Thường nói lời vọng ngữ thì sa đọa; có làm mà nói không, người tạo hai nghiệp ấy, chết cũng đọa địa ngục—The speaker of untruth goes down; also he who denies what he has done, both sinned against truth. After death they go together to hells.

307. Không ngăn trừ ác hạnh thì dù mặc áo cà sa, người ác cũng sẽ vi nghiệp ác, chết phải đọa địa ngục—A yellow saffron robe does not make him a monk. He who is of evil character and uncontrolled or unrestrained; such an evil-doer, by his evil deeds, is born in a woeful state.

308. Phá giới chẳng tu hành, thà nuốt hườn sắt nóng hừng hực lửa đốt thân còn hơn thọ lãnh của tín thí—It is better to swallow a red-hot iron ball than to be an immoral and uncontrolled monk feeding on the alms offered by good people.

309. Buông lung theo tà dục, sẽ chịu bốn việc bất an: mắc tội vô phước, ngủ không yên, bị chê là vô luân, đọa địa ngục—Four misfortunes occur to a careless man who commits adultery: acquisition of demerit, restlessness, moral blame and downward path.

Vậy chớ nên phạm đến—There is acquisition of demerit as well as evil destiny. No joy of the frightened man. The king imposes a heavy punishment. Therefore, man should never commit adultery.

311. Cũng như vụng nắm cỏ cô-sa (cỏ thơm) thì bị đứt tay, làm sa-môn mà theo tà hạnh thì bị đọa địa ngục—Just as kusa grass cuts the hand of those who wrongly grasped. Even so the monk who wrongly practised ascetism leads to a woeful state.

312. Những người giải đãi, nhiễm ô và hoài nghi việc tu phạm hạnh, sẽ không làm sao chứng thành quả lớn—An act  carelessly performed, a broken vow, and a wavering obedience to religious discipline, no reward can come from such a life.

313. Việc đáng làm hãy làm cho hết sức! Phóng đãng và rong chơi chỉ tăng thêm trần dục mà thôi—Thing should be done, let’s strive to do it vigorously, or do it with all your heart. A debauched ascetic only scatters the dust more widely.

314. Không tạo ác nghiệp là hơn, vì làm ác nhứt định thọ khổ; làm các thiện nghiệp là hơn, vì làm lành nhứt định thọ vui—An evil deed is better not done, a misdeed will bring future suffering. A good deed is better done now, for after doing it one does not grieve.

Hễ một giây lát buông lung là một giây lát sa đọa địa ngục—Like a frontier fortress is well guarded, so guard yourself, inside and outside. Do not let a second slip away, for each wasted second makes the downward path.

316. Không đáng hổ lại hổ, việc đáng hổ lại không, cứ ôm tà kiến ấy, địa ngục khó lánh xa—Those who embrace the wrong views,  are ashamed of what is not shameful, and are not ashamed of what is shameful, will not be able to avoid the hell .

317. Không đáng sợ lại sợ, việc đáng sợ lại không, cứ ôm tà kiến ấy, địa ngục khó lánh xa—Those who fear when they should not fear, and don’t fear in the fearsome, embrace these false views, will not be able to avoid the hell.

318. Không lỗi tưởng là lỗi, có lỗi lại tưởng không, cứ ôm tà kiến ấy, địa ngục khó lánh xa—Those who perceive faults in the faultless, and see no wrong in what is wrong; such men, embracing false doctrines, will not be able to avoid the hell.

319. Lỗi biết rằng lỗi, không lỗi biết rằng không lỗi, giữ tâm chánh kiến ấy, đường lành thấy chẳng xa—Those who perceive wrong as wrong and what is right as right, such men, embracing right views and go to the blissful state.

XXIII.PHẨM VOI—THE ELEPHANT

320. Voi xuất trận nhẫn chịu cung tên như thế nào, ta đây thường nhẫn chịu mọi điều phỉ báng như thế ấy. Thật vậy, đời rất lắm người phá giới (thường ghét kẻ tu hành)—As an elephant in the battlefield endures the arrows shot from a bow, I shall withstand abuse in the same manner. Truly, most common people are undisciplined (who are jealous of the disciplined).

To lead a tamed elephant in battle is good. To tame an elephant for the king to ride it better. He who tames himself to endure harsh words patiently is the best among men.

322. Con la thuần tánh là con vật lành tốt, con tuấn mã tín độ là con vật lành tốt, nhưng kẻ đã tự điêu luyện được mình lại càng lành tốt hơn—Tamed mules are excellent; Sindhu horses of good breeding are excellent too. But far better is he who has trained himself.

323.  Chẳng phải nhờ xe hay ngựa mà đến được cảnh giới Niết bàn, chỉ có người đã điêu luyện lấy mình mới đến được Niết bàn—Never by those vehicles, nor by horses would one go to Nirvana. Only self-tamers who can reach Nirvana.

324. Con voi tên là Tài Hộ (Mhamapala-Hộ vệ tài sản) nhưng đến kỳ phát dục thì lung lăng khó trị, khó buộc trói, không ăn gì cả và chỉ tưởng nhớ đến rừng sâu—The elephant maned Dhanapalaka, with pungent juice flowing, uncontrollable  and difficult to hold, eats no morsel; he longs for the elephant grove.

325. Như heo kia ưa ngủ, lại tham ăn, kẻ phàm ngu vì tham ăn ưa ngủ, nên phải bị tiếp tục sanh mãi trong vòng luân hồi—The stupid one, who is torpid, gluttonous, sleepy and rolls about lying like a hog nourished on pig-wash, that fool finds rebirth again and again.

In the past times, this mind went wandering wherever it liked, as it wished and as it pleased. But now I shall completely hold it under control as a rider with his hook a rutting elephant.

327. Hãy vui vẻ siêng năng, gìn giữ tự tâm để tự cứu mình ra khỏi nguy nan, như voi gắng sức để vượt khỏi chốn sa lầy—Take delight in heedfulness, check your mind and be on your guard. Pull yourself out of the evil path, just like the elelphant draws itself out of the mud.

328. Nếu gặp bạn đồng hành hiền lương cẩn trọng, giàu trí lự, hàng phục được gian nguy, thì hãy vui mừng mà đi cùng họ—If you get a prudent and good companion who is pure, wise and overcoming all dangers to walk with, let nothing hold you back. Let find delight and instruction in his companion.

329. Nếu không gặp được bạn đồng hành hiền lương, giàu trí lự, thì hãy như vua tránh nước loạn như voi bỏ về rừng—If you do not get a prudent and good companion who is pure, wise and overcoming all dangers to walk with; then like a king who has renounced a conquered kingdom, you should walk alone as an elephant does in the elephant forest.

Ở một mình còn rảnh rang khỏi điều ác dục như voi một mình thênh thang giữa rừng sâu—It is better to live alone than to be fellowship with the ignorant (the fool). To live alone doing no evil, just like an elephant roaming in the elephant forest.

331. Gặp bạn xa lâu ngày là vui, sung túc phải lúc là vui, mệnh chung có được thiện nghiệp là vui, lìa hết thống khổ là vui—It is pleasant to have friends when need arises. Enjoyment is pleasant when shared with one another. Merit is pleasant when life is at its end. Shunning of (giving up) all evil is pleasant.

332. Được kính dưỡng mẹ hiền là vui, kính dưỡng thân phụ là vui, kính dưỡng sa-môn là vui, kính dưỡng Thánh nhơn là vui—To revere the mother is pleasant; to revere the father is pleasant; to revere the monks is pleasant; to revere the sages is pleasant.

333. Già vẫn sống đức hạnh là vui, thành tựu chánh tín là vui, đầy đủ trí tuệ là vui, không làm điều ác là vui—To be virtue until old age is pleasant; to have steadfast faith is pleasant; to attain wisdom is pleasant; not to do evil is pleasant.

XXIV. PHẨM ÁI DỤC—CRAVING

334. Nếu buông lung thì tham ái tăng lên hoài như giống cỏ Tỳ-la-na mọc tràn lan, từ đời nầy tiếp đến đời nọ như vượn chuyền cây tìm trái—Craving grows like a creeper which creeps from tree to tree just like the ignorant man wanders from life to life like a fruit-loving monkey in the forest.

335. Nếu ở thế gian nầy mà bị ái dục buộc ràng, thì những điều sầu khổ càng tăng mãi như loài cỏ tỳ-la gặp mưa—Whoever binds to craving, his sorrows flourish like well-watered birana grass.

336. Nếu ở thế gian nầy, mà hàng phục được những ái dục khó hàng phục, thì sầu khổ tự nhiên rụng tàn như nước ngọt lá sen—Whoever in this world overcomes this unruly craving, his sorrows fall away just like water-drops from a lotus leaf.

Các ngươi chớ lại để bị ma làm hại như loài cỏ lau gặp cơn hồng thủy!”—This is my advice to you: “Root out craving; root it out, just like birana grass is rooted out. Let not Mara crush you again and again as a flood crushes a reed!

338. Đốn cây mà chưa đào hết gốc rễ thì tược vẫn ra hoài, đoạn trừ ái dục mà chưa sạch căn gốc thì khổ não vẫn nẩy sinh trở lại mãi—Latent craving is not conquered, suffering recovers and grows again and again, just like a tree hewn down grows up again as long as its roots is unrooted.

339. Những người có đủ 36 dòng ái dục, họ mạnh mẽ dong ruổi theo dục cảnh chẳng chút ngại ngùng, bởi vậy người đã có tâm tà kiến, hằng bị những tư tưởng ái dục làm trôi dạt hoài—If in any man, the thirty-six streams of craving are still flowing, such deluded person is still looking for pleasure and passion, and torrential thoughts of lust sweep him away.

340. Lòng ái dục tuôn chảy khắp nơi như giống cỏ man-la mọc tràn lan mặt đất. Ngươi hãy xen giống cỏ đó để dùng tuệ kiếm  đoạn hết căn gốc ái dục đi—Streams of pleasure and passion flow in all directions, just like the creeper sprouts and stands. Seeing the creeper that has sprung up in your mind, cut it off with wisdom.

341. Người đời thường vui thích theo ái dục, ưa dong ruổi lục trần, tuy họ có hướng cầu an lạc mà vẫn bị quanh quẩn trong chốn trầm luân—Common people are subject to attachment and thirst; they are always happy with pleasure; they run after passion. They look for happiness, but such men caught in the cycle of  birth and decay again and again.

Càng buộc ràng với phiền não, càng chịu khổ lâu dài—Men who are crazed with craving, are terrified like hunted hares. The more they hold fast by fetters, bonds, and afflictions, the longer they suffer.

Hàng Tỳ kheo vì cầu vô dục nên phải trước tự gắng lìa dục—Men who are crazed with craving, are terrified just like hunted hares. Therefore, a monk who wishes his own passionlessness, should first banish craving.

344. Người đã lìa dục xuất gia, lại tìm vui ở chốn sơn lâm, khác nào trở lại nhà; ngươi hãy xem hạng người đó, kẻ đã được mở ra rồi lại tự trói vào!—He who is free from desire for the household, finds pleasure (of asceticism or monastic life) in the forest, yet run back to that very home. Look at that man! He runs right back into that very bondage again!

345. Đối với người trí, sự trói buộc bằng dây gai, bằng cây, bằng sắt chưa phải kiên cố, chỉ có lòng luyến ái vợ con tài sản mới thật sự là sự trói buộc chắc bền—To a wise man, the bondage that is made of hemp, wood or iron, is not a strong bond, the longing for wives, children, jewels, and ornaments is a greater and far stronger attachment.

Hãy đoạn trừ đừng dính mắc, lìa dục mà xuất gia—The wise people say that that bond is very strong. Such fetters seem supple, but hard to break. Break them! Cut off desire and renounce the world!

Ai dứt được sự ràng buộc không còn dính mắc nữa, thì sẽ xa mọi thống khổ để ngao du tự tại—A man infatuated with lust falls back into the stream as a spider into the web spun by itself.  He who cuts off  this bond, retire from the world, with no clinging, will leave all sorrow behind.

348. Bỏ quá khứ, hiện tại, vị lai, mà vượt qua bờ kia; tâm đã giải thoát tất cả, thì không còn bị sanh già trở lại—Leave the past behind; let go the future; and give up the present; crossing the shore of existence, with mind released from everything, will not again undergo birth and old age.

Mong dục lạc tăng nhiều là tự trói mình càng thêm chắc chắn—Men who are disturbed by evil thoughts, swayed by strong passions and yearned only for pleasure; his craving grows more and more. Surely he strengthens his own fetters.

350. Muốn lìa xa ác tưởng hãy thường nghĩ tới bất tịnh. Hãy trừ hết ái dục, đừng để ác ma buộc ràng—He who wants to subdue evil thoughts, should meditate on the impurities of the body. Be mindful to make an end of craving, and to stop Mara’s bond.

351. Bước tới chỗ cứu cánh thì không còn sợ hãi; xa lìa ái dục thì không còn nhiễm ô: nhổ lấy mũi tên sanh hữu thì chỉ còn một thân nầy là cuối cùng, không bị tiếp tục sanh nữa—He who has reached the goal, without fear, without craving and without desire, has cut off the thorns of life. This is his final mortal body.

352. Xa lìa ái dục không nhiễm trước, thông đạt từ vô ngại, thấu suốt nghĩa vô ngại, và thứ lớp của tự cú, đó thật là bậc đại trí đại trượng phu, chỉ còn một thân nầy là cuối cùng, không bị tiếp tục sinh nữa—He who is without craving, without attachment; who understands subtleties of words and meanings; they are truly a great wise who bear the final mortal body.

353. Ta đã hàng phục tất cả. Ta đã rõ biết tất cả. Ta không nhiễm một pháp nào. Ta xa lìa hết thảy, diệt dục mà giải thoát và tự mình chứng ngộ, thì còn ai là Thầy ta nữa—I have overcome myself, I do know all. I am attached to none. I have renounced all, I am free from all craving; having by myself attained supernatural knowledge, to whom shall I call my teacher?

No gift is better than the gift of Truth (Dharma). No taste is sweeter than the taste of truth. No joy is better than the joy of  Truth. No conquest is better than the conquest of craving; it overcomes all suffering.

He who craves for wealth destroys himself as if he were ruining others.

356. Cỏ làm hại rất nhiều ruộng vườn, tham dục làm hại rất nhiều thế nhân. Vậy nên bố thí cho người lìa tham, sẽ được quả báo lớn—Human beings are damaged by lust just as weeds damage the fields. Therefore, what is given to those who are lustless, yields great reward.

357. Cỏ làm hại rất nhiều ruộng vườn, sân nhuế làm hại rất nhiều thế nhân. Vậy nên bố thí cho người lìa sân, sẽ được quả báo lớn—Human beings are damaged by hatred in just the same manner as weeds damage the fields. Therefore, to give to those who are free from hatred, yields great reward.

358. Cỏ làm hại rất nhiều ruộng vườn, ngu si làm hại rất nhiều thế nhân. Vậy nên bố thí cho người lìa si, sẽ được quả báo lớn—Human beings are damaged by delusion just like weeds damage the fields. Therefore, to give to those who are free from delusion, yields great reward.

359. Cỏ làm hại rất nhiều ruộng vườn, ái dục làm hại rất nhiều thế nhân. Vậy nên bố thí cho người lìa dục, sẽ được quả báo lớn—Human beings are damaged by craving just like weeds damage the fields. Therefore, to give to those who rid of craving, yields great reward.

A monk who escapes from the five fetters: lust, hate, delusion, pride, false views; is called one who has crossed the flood.

387. Mặt trời chiếu sáng ban ngày, mặt trăng chiếu sáng ban đêm, khí giới chiếu sáng dòng vua chúa, thiền định chiếu sáng kẻ tu hành, nhưng hào quang Phật chiếu sáng khắp thế gian—The sun shines in the day; at night shines the moon; the armor shines the warrior king; the Brahman is bright in his meditation. But the Buddha shines in glory ceaselessly day and night.

388. Dứt bỏ các ác nghiệp, gọi là Bà-la-môn; thường tu hành thanh tịnh, thì  gọi là Sa-môn; còn trừ bỏ cấu uế, gọi là người xuất gia—He who has discarded evil is called a Brahmana. He who lives in peace called a Sramana. He who gives up all impurities is called a Pabbajita (religious recluse).

389. Chớ nên đánh đập Bà-la-môn! Bà-la-môn chớ nên sân hận! Người đánh đập mang điều đáng hổ, người sân hận hay lấy oán trả oán lại càng đáng hổ hơn—One should not hurt a Brahmana, nor should a Brahmana let himself become angry on the one who hurt him (return evil for evil). Shame on him who strikes a Brahmana! More shame on him who let himself become angry, or who returns evil for evil!

Trong lòng còn chứa đầy tham dục, thì dung nghi bên ngoài chỉ là trang điểm suông—What will matted or shaved hair do? What is the use of garment of goatskin, or yellow saffron robe?
